The Banjo Lesson by Henry Ossawa Tanner (1859-1937)

You dream of expressing yourself through music.

Maybe you sing only in the shower, maybe you took lessons for years – but you know that you like music and want to make it yourself. Yet you feel stuck. You don’t know how to turn the sounds in your head into sounds in the world, or the notes and rhythms on the page into something meaningful.

It’s painful to sense that gap between where you are and where you want to be! I’ve been there many times, in many ways. And in my years of teaching, I’ve had many students who feel stuck too – from total beginners to seasoned musicians. Curious Cat Music Studio is here to help you get unstuck, so you can experience the joy of musical expression!

Curious Cat offers weekly, online-only lessons in piano, voice, and/or songwriting, with an experienced musician and instructor who’s been where you are. You’ll gain tools customized to your unique musical goals and experience, such as an in-depth tour of the anatomy involved in singing, or songwriting challenges based on specific musical ideas.

More importantly, you’ll have compassionate, real-time presence – because so much of learning music is not just about the notes and rhythms, but about having a guide who’s with you every step of the way.

Are lessons even worth it, you ask? Well, no need to take my word for it:

“Aaron’s a fantastic instructor – Their voice lessons are accessible and delightful. I had never taken voice lessons before they made me feel comfortable right away. I learned so much about theory, technique, and my own vocal capabilities in a short amount of time.” – Hannah

“I’ve really appreciated their enthusiasm for discovering things I can already do and sharing how and why the things I’ve tried on my own haven’t worked. I feel really trusted by this instructor, and it feels like they’re really working to prepare me as an independent performer, rather than needing their help forever…

“I feel like I’m getting a really flexible, thorough understanding of the mechanics of my voice and great, practical advice on adjustments I can make so my current repertoire is more consistent and feels easier. I trust this instructor, and their integrity and considerate communication comes through in the work they do.” – Meredith

“I can attest that learning music with Aaron is very healing and fun. It is not at all like my miserable practice as a child. I used to have to record my flute practice on cassette tapes (yes cassette tapes) for my band director to scrutinize. I learned to play the Right Notes In A Row, but I lost all my musicality. I was terrified of Getting It Wrong. The only thing I felt when I performed was anxiety, and it showed.

“With Aaron I am learning to *play* around with music with no judgement:
No achieving this piece by this date
No mandatory minutes of practice
No judgement about genre

Just pure ✨play✨

“However, a very surprising thing happened. While I have only made baby steps in the world of music due to sound sensitivities and illness, Aaron cured my decade of writer’s block nearly overnight. Now journaling is no longer like bleeding into a page. It turns out that learning to be a happy curious creative person is a whole *different animal* than practicing for Performance.” – Emily
